Pedro Torres (b. 1982) is a Brazilian-Spanish visual artist, based in Barcelona. His artistic practice is mainly focused around the concept of time, exploring different aspects of the principle from both scientific and philosophical perspectives. From the central axis of time he makes connections with other fields of human experience, including space, materiality, memory, language, and image. Torres uses a variety of means to develop his works and research projects, which he carries out in a combined and subjective manner, where the aesthetic and conceptual find common ground. The image, understood broadly, is always present as a mechanism, tool and/or concept that functions as a backbone and questions certain core ideas, for example, the relationship between the formation of memory and images; the image with respect to history (time, anachronism) and narrative (language); as well as the appropriated and decontextualized image. A rigorous approach to his chosen subject matter and attention to theory and scientific approximations underscore Torres’ practice, together with a continual exploration of different media and processes, and research, which is always methodical, intuitive, and poetic in nature.

He has recently held solo exhibitions at Fundación MAPFRE (Tenerife), Llum Barcelona, Twin Gallery (Madrid), Centre d’Art Tecla Sala (L’Hospitalet de Llobregat), Spazio Volta (Bergamo), Juan Naranjo Gallery (Barcelona), aarduork (Venice), art3 contemporain (Valence), Centro Párraga (Murcia), CASA SEAT (Barcelona), Chiquita Room (Barcelona), Luis Adelantado (Valencia) and Blueproject Foundation (Barcelona). His work has been included in important group exhibitions and biennials at venues such as MACBA (Barcelona), Fotonoviembre, Bienal Internacional de Fotografía of Tenerife, MIRA Festival (Barcelona), the Jinan International Biennale (China), Biennal d’Art Diputació de Tarragona, Anita Schwartz (Río de Janeiro), Centre de les Arts Lliures–Fundació Joan Brossa (Barcelona), Casal Solleric (Palma de Mallorca), Fabra i Coats: Centre d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, OTR. espacio de arte (Madrid), Bienal de Cuenca (Ecuador), CaixaForum Barcelona, BienalSUR (Buenos Aires), NC-arte (Bogotá), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Mardin Biennial (Turkey), Bienal de las Fronteras (Mexico) y Fundació Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona). His videos have been projected in different festivals throughout Europe, South America, and Asia.

He has been awarded numerous prizes and fellowships, including, most recently, a grant from the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome (2023-24), Barcelona Crea (2023), and, on multiple occasions, research grants from OSIC on behalf of the Departament de Cultura of the Generalitat de Catalunya (2022, 2020, 2013). He was awarded the PostBrossa (2021), the Exchange art3/Homesession grant (2021), the Ayudas a la Creación S.O.S ARTE/CULTURA sponsored by Vegap (2021), the Convocatoria de Producción of Fundación “la Caixa” (2020), the production prize of the Sala d’Art Jove de Barcelona (2013) and the visual arts grant awarded by the Fundación Botín (2007). He was a finalist for the Premio Internacional Obra Abierta (2022) and the Premio Ciutat de Palma Antoni Gelabert de Artes Visuales (2021, 2020). He has completed artistic residencies in Valence (France), Skagaströnd (Iceland), Seoul (South Korea), Berlin (Germany) and Barcelona (Spain). His works belong to the collections of MACBA, Fundación Botín, Blueproject Foundation, colección olorVISUAL, Colección Untitled, MadridAbierto, ICP New York (artist book), UPV/Colección de libros de artista, and other private collections.
