In the plastic universe of Joaquín Lalanne we can see reflected his admiration for Botero, with whom he shares the fixation to create a universe enclosing an alternative and credible reality. And like the Colombian artist he faces such conviction with the “deep longing to do things right, always better”.

Lalanne paints imaginary universes in which he combines iconographic elements such as cardboard paper, deep and unattainable seas and skies, figures that share space with the Pink Panther, a chamber orchestra, a soloist or a philosopher, who are part of the Uruguayan artist’s palette of characters, including himself and his partner. They all cast this imaginary landscape often framed with curtains holding his canvases, turning his works into fragile scenarios.

We are in front of a 21st century Renaissance artist. Cultivated, irreverent; and, above all, an artist whose imaginary expedition remains faithful to the old role models. In order to capture and express striking metaphors, a pictorial spell is not enough. Previously one has to perfect the technique, the color, the drawing, the composition, the light, the proportion…

Lalanne has been able to develop his talent with tenacity. The paint brush does not come with a built-in software that captures in simple strokes the tangle of leaves of an olive tree or the shadows with complex light degradations. Nor is there an App that frames and stretches the canvas on the frame or varnishes it with obsessive care.

Only in this way can an artist approach with humility and perseverance the rich and creative source of art. His dialogue with Pop Art, with the Greco-Roman antiquity archive, with the history of European painting, and his Latin American references have contributed to shaping his unmistakable personality.

En el universo plástico de Joaquín Lalanne queda plasmada la admiración por Botero y su obsesión por crear un universo que encierre una realidad alternativa y creíble. Y como el artista colombiano, afronta esta tarea con convicción, con el “profundo anhelo de hacer las cosas bien; siempre mejores”.

Lalanne pinta universos imaginarios en los que se combinan elementos iconográficos como el cartón; mares y cielos profundos e inabarcables; figuras que comparten protagonismo con la Pantera Rosa, una orquesta de cámara, un solista o un filósofo, que constituyen parte de la paleta de personajes del artista uruguayo, a la que no son ajenos ni él mismo ni su pareja. Todos forman parte de un paisaje imaginario junto a las cortinas que suelen abrazar sus telas, convirtiendo sus obras en frágiles escenarios.

Estamos ante un renacentista del siglo XXI. Cultivado y lenguaraz. Y, sobre todo, un artista cuya expedición imaginativa sigue fiel a los viejos patrones. Para plasmar metáforas potentes no basta con un conjuro pictórico. Previamente hay que perfeccionar la técnica, el color, el dibujo, la composición, el cálculo, la luz, la proporción...

Lalanne ha sido capaz de desarrollar su talento con tenacidad. El pincel no lleva incorporado un software que plasme en simples trazos la maraña de hojas de un olivo o las sombras con degradaciones lumínicas complejas. Tampoco existe una App que encuadre y tense una tela en el bastidor o que la barnice con obsesiva delicadeza.

Sólo así puede un artista aproximarse con humildad y tenacidad al manantial creativo del arte. Su diálogo con el Pop Art, con el archivo de la antigüedad greco-romana, con la historia de la pintura europea y sus referentes latinoamericanos han contribuido a configurar su inconfundible personalidad.
